Citation Styles
When writing a research paper, one of the first things you will do is read research that others have done before you; this will include books, articles and studies. More often than not, you will be using THEIR ideas, thoughts, and research in YOUR paper. When you do this, it is crucial that you mention (or "cite") the sources you have used and referred to. If you do not, you are plagiarizing, or stealing, information (more on that later). At the end of your research paper you will need to include a bibliography/works cited section. This is an alphabetical list of citations that contain all the information that readers will need to locate these resources for themselves.
There are many different types of citation formats including the Modern Language Association (MLA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and Chicago (Turabian or Chicago) styles. Your teachers at Moultonborough Academy expect you to use the latest edition of the MLA style, which is in its 7th edition. This guide will provide useful tools so that you may correctly format your paper, create picture perfect work cited/bibliography pages, and ensure that all of your in-text citations are spot on.

Why We Cite
We cite our sources for two reasons:
1) To give credit where credit is due, recognizing authors for their hard work.
2) To avoid plagiarizing.
